What to Do When You Feel "Ugg" (And Why I’m Chopping Off 6 Years of Hair)

What do you do when you just feel… ugly?
This is the exact question I’ve been trying to solve all summer. My sibling and I have had multiple late-night conversations about this specific phenomenon—that weird, lingering phase where you just feel universally "ugg" all the time, but you can't quite put your finger on why. Is it my hair? My nails? A random breakout? My wardrobe?
After weeks of overthinking, I finally pinpointed the culprit: my summer routine (or lack thereof).
The Chaos of a Travel-Heavy Summer
This summer, I’ve been living out of a suitcase—traveling back and forth across the state visiting friends, seeing family, and commuting for work. And let me tell you, constant travel is the ultimate beauty-routine killer.
Because I’ve been constantly on the go:
My skincare routine is practically nonexistent.
My outfits are a mess because I always manage to forget the one essential piece needed to complete the look.
My hair gets zero effort because I’m rushing out the door at 7:15 AM every morning. (My hair option spectrum currently ranges from "claw clip" to "slicked-back ponytail.")
Living in a state of perpetual rush has left me feeling utterly frazzled—and that frazzled energy directly impacts how I see myself in the mirror.
My Emergency Reset Routine
So, what do I actually do when the "ugg" feeling hits emergency levels?
When I need a quick confidence reset, I start with the basics:
Dermaplane my face and clean up my eyebrows.
Take an "Everything Shower" (you know the one: scrub, shave, deep condition).
Blow-dry my hair so I feel put together.
Lay out my favorite outfit for the next morning.
Go to bed early.
Usually, waking up after a full reset night makes me feel 80% better. But what happens when the reset routine isn't enough?
The Impulse Chopping of the Hair
Sometimes, a shower and a cute outfit just don't cut it. Sometimes, you have to shock your system to escape a beauty funk.
And for me? That means making a drastic, terrifying change: I am chopping off my hair.
To understand why this is a massive deal, you need to know two things:
I have had long hair for about six years, and I have strictly refused to cut any real length off during that entire time.
The last time I had short hair, a stylist accidentally gave me a bowl cut that left me looking—and feeling—the worst I have ever looked in my life.
Right now, my hair reaches three-quarters of the way down my back. And I am about to get it chopped to right above my shoulders.
Do I know for a fact that it’s going to look amazing? Absolutely not. Am I nervous? Terrified! But I’m doing it anyway because I need to snap out of the stagnant energy I’ve been sitting in all summer. Wish me luck!
The Mind-Beauty Connection
Beyond travel fatigue and hair length, this summer taught me a huge lesson about my own psychology: my confidence is deeply tied to my mental health.
Whenever I enter a period of high anxiety or burnout, my physical self-confidence plummets. Then, feeling insecure fuels my anxiety even more, creating a toxic feedback loop until I consciously break the cycle.
I know that once I move back to campus, lock back into my daily routine, hit the gym regularly, and spend quality time with my favorite people, I’ll instantly start feeling like myself again. It’s fascinating (and a little comforting) how much our external confidence
is just a reflection of internal fulfillment.
